Overview

Culls Cottage is a suburb, traditional, yet chic, Cotswolds Holiday Cottage, the main part of which dates back to the 1670’s and recently appeared in The Guardian Saturday Travel section as one of the five coolest places to stay in the Cotswold’s.

It has many original features including beamed ceilings and a large inglenook fireplace. The original building has recently been sympathetically renovated and today the property comprises a lounge, modern kitchen, separate dining room, three double bedrooms (one of which is downstairs) a luxury bathroom and a separate shower room and downstairs toilet. All the rooms are interior designed in soothing neutral colours and natural fabrics with original art works and artefacts.

The cottage has every modern comfort which will make your stay totally relaxing; the fully fitted kitchen has a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge and freezer. It is equipped for the gourmet chef with all the utensils, cookery books and cooking equipment you should need, as well as the finest Riedel wine glasses, white bone china place settings and a Gaggia coffee espresso/cappuccino machine.

There are flat screen televisions (with freeview) in the lounge and master bedroom, together with CD and DVD facilities. There  is a small library of hand picked books, information guides, maps and so forth, as well as games for all ages. We have recently installed free wireless internet and telephone.

The three double bedrooms sleep up to six guests. The cottage also has a double sofa bed (in the lounge) to sleep an extra two people. We also have a cot and high chair which we are happy to provide free of charge.

Set in the heart of Southrop, the garden of Culls Cottage lies to the rear of the cottage. It is a large garden, almost a 1/4 of an acre in size and was very neglegted and overgrown when we took it over in March 2009.

There are numerous places to sit and dine in the garden and outside lights have been placed throughout the garden for your enhanced enjoyment. However, we suggest that you stay out in the garden in the dark; one of the joys of Southrop is its night sky. The relative lack of light pollution here (there are no street lights) can lead to some spectacular starry nights. The surrounding trees are also home to many birds and you can often hear owls hooting to one another.

Eco Escape: The owner of Culls Cottage is making a contribution to preserving the environment and reducing global warming. They are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and are proud to hold their Gold Award. They also run their business as a Carbon Neutral Enterprise and offset any carbon emissions that they can not eliminate with the company co2balance, who audit them annually and put a portion of their contribution to the planting of trees on land adjacent to Summercombe wood in Somerset.

Child Friendly Accommodation: Families are welcome at Culls Cottage and there is a small selection of toys and games for children, as well as a number of Dvd’s and books. The Cottage has a cot and high chair for younger children free of charge and there is also offer a baby sitting service subject to availability, just ask us about prices and availability when you book.

Tourist Attractions: Culls Cottage is perfectly placed for visiting many key tourist attractions including the stunning cotswolds village of Burford with its excellent selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. A short drive away is Woodstock, a fine Georgian town with a distinct Royal heritage. Renowned for its antique shops, the town also offers an interesting selection of other shops, galleries and places to eat, as well as the Oxfordshire Museum and Blenheim Palace. Blenheim Palace was birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough. This world heritage site houses the Blenheim tapestries a magnificent series, depicting the famous battles of the 1st Duke, Sir John Churchill, on whom the palace was bestowed as a gift from Queen Anne and a grateful nation, following a victory at the battle of Blenheim in 1704.

Eating and Drinking: There is plenty of choice for Pubs in the Village of Southrop. Try The Swan, although technically a pub the main dining area is really a restaurant and is a lovely restaurant with great food and wines and recently was voted Which? good food Guide Restaurant of the Year 2010. Sourcing and working with local producers and incorporating seasonal ingredients from the immediate area, such as crayfish from the old gravel pits in Lechlade, lamb from Southrop, partridge from the Hatherop estate and pork from Kelmscott. The Village of Burford is a short distance drive in the car and for something a bit special try The Restaurant at The Lamb Inn on Sheep Street. The finest fresh ingredients, many produced locally, are used to create a cuisine that is contemporary English with strong traditional influences.  The extensive cellar offers a fine choice of specially selected wines from the Old and New Worlds to complement the menu.

Food Stores: There is Budgens in Burford and the nearest supermarket is Tesco which is located in Witney which is only 6 miles away.  Why not pre order your grocery orders for delivery for the cottage.

Sporting activities: For golf lovers visit Burford Golf Club. The Club is particularly noted for its high-quality greens. Burford Golf Club proves a popular venue for visitors - it is situated in the heart of the beautiful Cotswolds and provides an array of stunning scenery, both within and just outside the Club’s boundaries. There is excellent local riding Stuart Farm Stables in Burford who offer various riding lessons from private to group and we cater for all levels of riders. If you enjoy a good walk or love to cycle The Chestnuts is ideal location for you to explore the great outdoors. There are numerous guide books, local and regional cycling and walking guides and maps at The Chestnuts as well as a number of laminated routes that you can take out with you. There are more than 500 miles of public footpaths and bridleways to explore. We have provided places for you to dry out your boots and secure your bicycle and there is an Emergency cycle and puncture repair kit available at The Chestnuts, which includes tyre levers, puncture repair kit, lubricant and pump.
