Farm Experience: Bookham Farm is still essentially a commercial farm but we have always encouraged wildlife. Much of the farm is in Countryside Stewardship and in the South Wessex Downs Environmentally Sensitive Area (Dorset). The owners have planted several acres of Woodland and in the last few years have put up about 40 owl, kestrel and other bird boxes around the farm. They have also built an artificial badgers sett.
What you can see from the windows: Beautiful open countryside and farmland.
Tourist Attractions: Visit Thomas Hardy Cottage is a beautiful secluded place to visit if you are following the Thomas Hardy Trail through Dorset. The cottage, just outside Higher Bockhapmton, was built by Hardy’s great-grandfather in 1800 and little has been altered externally since then. Also close by is Maiden Castle is the largest and most famous pre-Roman fortress in Britain. The site is not a “castle” in the medieval sense of the term, but a hilltop enclosure defended by high banks and ditches. Maiden Castle is nearly 47 acres in size, with banks as high as 80 feet. Or visit Portland Bill and Chesil Beach which are the graveyards of many vessels that failed to reach Weymouth or Portland Roads. The Portland Race is caused by the meeting of the tides between the Bill and the Shambles sandbank about 3 miles SE.
Eating and Drinking: The Gaggle of Geesein Buckland Newton. Everything on the menu is produced by the chef and as much of it is as locally sourced and seasonal as possible with parts of the menu change daily according to what produce that is available. The Piddle Inn and Poachers Inn at Piddletrethide are within 3 miles and both provide excellent local food
Foodstore: There is the Chapels store in Buckland Newton which is only half a mile away. There is also a Tesco in Dorchester which is 9 miles away, so why not pre order your grocery delivery for your arrival at the Cottage.
Sporting Activities: Fly Fishing on the Rivers Piddle and Frome with good brown trout populations can be arranged with Wessex Chalk Streams just up the road in Tolpuddle. They also have trout lakes beside the River Piddle and offer Fly Fishing tuition, not a mile upstream from Mill Cottage. For a spot of Golf try Came Down Golf Club which was founded in 1896, and boasts an excellent golfing challenge, suitable for all skill levels. The courses its on chalk downland and offers stunning 360 degree views to locations such as Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester, Isle of Wight, Maiden Castle and more. Cycling is the ideal mode of transport to observe and absorb West Dorset’s finest scenery. Cycle from the county town of Dorchester through the heart of Dorset to the historic coastal town of Lyme Regis on the Devon-Dorset border, or travel north to Sherborne taking in some of Dorset’s most picturesque villages. Whether you cast a line from the famous Chesil Beach or prefer the quiet of inland lakes, West Dorset will reward you with endless hours of fishing pleasure.
